The fireplace in the room with the wood paneling was originally the outside of the house. When the additon was added in the 1960's, this fireplace was made by cutting throught the backside of the chimney. The work was poorly done and unsafe. Fortunately, this fireplace hadn't had much use over the years.

The small door between the den and the living room is going to be widened. A door will be added to the left of the wood-paneled fire place.

This is the fireplace on the living room side.

A lot of brick and block came out of these walls.

Lentils were installed to carry the load of the framing for the roof above.

The door openings are framed. Joe assures me that everything is plumb, square and level.

  Finally we make it through!

The fireplace needs work on both sides to correct poor work from the addition in the 1960's.

And finally we can start preping for tile!

Lath is fastened to the brick and fat mud is floated over the lath and brick to prepare for tile. Both sides of the fireplace are floated.

We set threaded rod into the masonry with epoxy, then bolted the 2x4 onto the front of the fireplace. Joe will later use this as a base for a cherry mantle that will match the custom cabinets that will go in this room.
A large porcelain tile was set on this side of the fireplace. The ends of the fireplace are deliberately unfinished to allow the mud to be floated to the exact depth needed to turn the corner from the front of the fireplace.

A natural stone was set on the hearth and fireplace on the other side (in the living room). The same technique was used to prepare the wall to receive the mantle.
